La parola latina mwdgcastellum (plurale mwdwCastella), diminutivo di mweamweqcastrum, si riferisce nella mwegciviltà romana a due tipi di costruzioni:

• il mwfqcastellum militare è un mwfgfortino,cite-ref-1[1] di solito integrato nel sistema di fortificazione del mwgwmwhalimes. Nel mwhqMedioevo, è il castello centrale del mwhgcastrum, città fortificata più o meno su un'altura;
• il mwiacastellum divisorium è un'opera (mwiqmwigcastellum Aquae), che riceveva l'acqua dall'mwiwacquedotto romano e che veniva divisa tra le diverse linee di distribuzione. La città francese di mwjaNîmes (mwjqNemausus) conserva vestigia del suo mwjgcastellum divisorium.

La parola latina mwkacastellum è l'origine delle parole francesi mwkqcastel e mwkgchastel, poi mwkwcastello.
